Bristol: 4 Season-Interest Perennial Border

This is a south-facing wall side border, long and slim, with a row of espalier fruit trees against the wall. The theme of this planting plan is a natural style planting with silver foliage and muted colour flowers. To avoid competing for sunlight and nutrients, most of the plants chosen are relatively short or dwarf, drought tolerant and resilient in low nutrients conditions.

Over half of the plants are evergreen or semi-evergreen and well placed, which would provide a great winter interest. Summer is the peak time of flowers. All the plants in this plan are blooming during summertime. The border will be covered by white, pink, purple flowers and some muted yellow dotting.

However, spring and autumn are not plain. There are several long flowering plants, like Daphne x transatlantica ‘Eternal Fragrance’ and Oenothera lindheimeri ‘Whirling Butterflies’, which flower from early spring to autumn. Besides, Irises and Euphorbias are the main characters in spring; and Echinops, Sedums and Echinaceas in autumn.
